“Hi – I’m Jeff. I paint dots”
Now, can’t you just imagine the cold sweats I get when someone asks me, “So, what do you do for a living?”
This may not always be the case, but that question seems to constantly come up when I’m standing in a group of people… who always seem to have really cool jobs like doctor, fighter pilot, member of a S.W.A.T. team, or skipper of a boat on the show “The Deadliest Catch.”
I learned long ago that looking down at the floor is fairly useless in getting me out of awkward situations in the grownup world… and then, once everyone has finished embellishing all of the really cool things it is that they do, there’s usually a quiet, sometimes awkward, pause before everyone turns their heads my way, and stares.
I’ve practiced my delivery in so many different ways… but in the end, it usually just comes out as, “I paint dots.” Another awkward silence usually follows… but eventually, someone will compassionately jump in with something equivalent to, “Oh, that’s nice.”
I know, you’re thinking, “How sad for you,” right? Well, it really isn’t, because I love what I do… and I’ve heard that I do it well.
From Zero Talent to National Recognition (what a country!)
Jeff is a hard worker and tries not to take himself too seriously. He is of average height, used to be skinny, and is easily distracted. Other than being able to paint amazingly realistic murals of the night sky… he pretty much has no other talent at all.
What Jeff lacks in artistic talent he more than makes up for in perseverance. Had he not been so driven to teach himself how to recreate the look of a real night sky for the past 25 years, who knows what he would be doing today. Maybe a Fighter Pilot.
It amazes him to no end, and his friends too, that he has received national recognition from media outlets like HGTV, The Fine Living Network, Angie’s List, The Robb Report, Affluent magazine, Unique Homes magazine, Reside magazine as well as many others.
And that’s not all that his friends shake their heads at. Jeff is constantly asked to fly around the country, and even around the world, to share his unique talent in some of the nicest homes imaginable. In fact, you can count some of the wealthiest people in the world among his long list of clients (please don’t ask who).
A recent request came for him to fly to Nigeria to paint for some wealthy customers… but he regrettably had to turn that down because he didn’t feel very comfortable with the unrest in that region. But, besides almost every state in the USA, he has been flown to Canada, the Philippines, the Cayman Islands, and other countries are in the planning stages.
The Early Years
Having grown up in the searing heat of Bakersfield, California… Jeff learned that it’s much cooler to be over at the ocean or up camping in the redwoods (both within a couple of hours from where he grew up) and those are still two of his favorite places. So, during those blistering summer months, you could usually find him in one of those two places. Well, you might also find him in the Left Field Pavillion at Dodger Stadium watching a game and eating a Dodger Dog while listening to Vin Skully on a portable radio.
At the beach, he loved fishing from the pier and also body surfing, and up in the redwoods, he enjoyed fishing and hiking. It was during a night up in the redwoods where he saw, and also fell in love with, a real night sky for the first time.
Today, Jeff is married, has 5 children, a Belgian Malinois dog, and two Indian Ringneck parrots.
They now make their home in Salt Lake City, which works out nicely, since there’s an airport close by for Jeff to start his commute from to his next job.
