Hi – I’m Jeff. I PAINT DOTS!
Now, can’t you just imagine the cold sweats I get when someone asks me, “So, what do you do for a living?”
This may not always be the case, but that question seems to constantly come up when I’m standing in a group of people… who always seem to have really cool jobs like doctor, fighter pilot, member of a S.W.A.T. team, or skipper of a boat on the show “The Deadliest Catch.” Go figure!
I learned long ago that looking down at the floor is fairly useless in getting me out of awkward situations in the grownup world… and, once everyone has finished embellishing all of the really cool things it is that they do, there’s usually a pause before everyone ends up staring, and waiting for me.
Sure, I’ve practiced my delivery in many different ways… but in the end, it usually just comes out as, “I paint dots.” An awkward silence usually follows… but eventually, someone will compassionately jump in with something equivalent to, “Oh.”
I know, you’re thinking, “How sad for you,” right? Well, it really isn’t, because I love what I do… and I’ve heard I do it well.
From Zero Talent to National Recognition (Go figure!)
Jeff is a hard worker and tries not to take himself too seriously. He is average height, used to be skinny and he is easily distracted. Other than being able to paint amazingly realistic murals of the night sky… he pretty much has no talent at all.
What Jeff lacks in artistic talent he more than makes up for in perseverance. Had he not been so driven to teach himself how to duplicate the look of a real night sky for the past 25 years, who knows what he would be doing today. Rest assured it wouldn’t be in any field that required talent.
Yet, with no talent to really speak of, it amazes him to no end that he has received national recognition from media outlets like, HGTV, The Fine Living Network, The Robb Report, Affluent magazine, Unique Homes magazine, Reside magazine as well as many others.
Something else that baffles him is that he is asked, by the greatest customers on the planet, to fly around the country/world on a regular basis and share his unique talent in some of the nicest homes imaginable. In fact, you can count some of the wealthiest people in the world among his clients (please don’t ask who).
A recent request came for him to fly to Nigeria to paint for some wealthy customers… but he regrettably had to turn that down because he didn’t feel too comfortable with the unrest in that region.
Still here? Alright, but try and stay awake.
Having grown up in Bakersfield, California’s sizzling heat, Jeff learned that it’s much cooler at the ocean and up in the redwoods, both within a couple of hours from where he grew up. So, during the summer months that’s where you would usually find him.
At the beach he loved fishing from the pier and body surfing (he didn’t have the coordination for real surfing), and in the redwoods he enjoyed fishing and hiking. And, it was during a night up in the redwoods where he saw, and fell in love with, a real night sky for the first time.
Today, Jeff is married, has 5 children, a black Lab and two Indian Ringneck parrots (all of whom have much more talent than he does) and he wonders, each time he gets on a plane, how it is that he is about to fly off somewhere for a few weeks to paint murals of the night sky for his customers… when those murals, until only about 15 years ago, were only a hobby and an obsession for him.
